What Are 8mm Film Reels
Before smartphones and camcorders, 8mm film was the gold standard for home filmmaking. Since its introduction by the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York. Kodak created the 8mm reel during the Great Depression as a highly affordable “home movie” alternative to their existing 16mm format, which was too expensive for the average family at the time. This format actually ran on 16mm film stock that was exposed on both sides during filming and then split down the middle during laboratory processing. It features larger, almost square sprocket holes along one edge.
